Enriched Privation |
My selfie was inspired by the ideas I read from Society of the Spectacle and from the works of Shantell Martin. I created a digital selfie drawing called Enriched Privation. "The spectacle is not a collection of images; it is a social relation between people that is mediated by images." The spectacle is not a collection of stars; it is a social relation between people that is mediated by images. The spectacle widens and gets worse over time. Privation means you live without necessary things. Enriched privation means the privation you have is improved by something added to it.

Shantell Martin Inspired Selfie
“ Money”
The quote that influenced this Shantell Martin inspired art is "The commodity's domination was at first exerted aver the economy in an occult manner; the economy itself, the material basis of social life, remained unperceived and not understood, like the familiar which is not necessarily known. In a society where the concrete commodity is rare or unusual, money, apparently dominant, presents itself as an emissary armed with full powers who speaks in the name of an unknown force. With the industrial revolution, the division of labor in manufactures, and mass production far the world market, the commodity appears in fact as a power which comes to occupy social life. It is then that political economy takes shape, as the dominant science and the science of domination.”

Anna and Andy Warhol Writing Assignment
Andy Warhol and Ana Mendieta, both stand out as one of the most influential artists in their era. Andy Warhol was an American artist, director and producer who was a leading figure in pop art. Ana Mendieta was Cuban America who was very successful in her art, sculptor, paintings, and best known for "Earth Body" art work. Both having iconic piece of art work and getting art ideas getting influences by all the event that happen in their life. Have going through their fame and success, both had to overcome plenty of advertises. Not being just known as iconic artists, they are also known as being inspirational artists as well.
Ana Mendieta art was heavily inspired by domestic violence (rape) and nature. At young age, Ana was refugee escaping her country Cuba. Her silhouettes and her taking her pictures in nature type of scenes. The scary part, using her blood in her arts to represents domestic violence among women. She would use organic materials, such as blood, feathers, rocks, fire and flowers to show cycles of women rights, life and death, and rebirth. Her work today has been one of the most impactful. Mendieta was a key figure in the Body art movement that emerged from the Performance art movement. Her sustained use of the body's simplified and often nude form to depict both presence and its opposite, absence is an essential component to her work whether denoting the human or the ethereal.
Mendieta is recognized as an important contributor to Land art, a movement in which landscape and the work of art are inextricably linked, taking the possibilities of art outside gallery confines She would show her work through photography, performances, and film. One of her famous art masterpieces is her "body tracks" art. All her sweat in her photos are represented as blood, and that how she symbolizes rape in her art. On Sept 8, 1985, Sadly Ana Mendieta died horribly from a fall from her apartment on the 34th floor apartment. All her art continue to be created a impact and icon as her legacy lives on.

Andy Warhol, one of the most recognized and iconic pop artist in 1900s, utilized his talents and created it into something special. In Andy Warhol early life, he has came across a lot of adversity growing up. Being Autistic child, mourning the death of his mom. Growing up, was very successful with arts. He went to Carnegie Mellon School, therefore his creativity has got it recognized. A graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949, he moved to New York City and gained success as a commercial artist. He got his first break in August 1949, when Glamour Magazine wanted him to illustrate a feature entitled “Success is a Job in New York. Warhol pioneered the development of the process whereby an enlarged photographic image is transferred to a silk screen that is then placed on a canvas and inked from the back. Each Warhol silkscreen used this technique that enabled him to produce the series of mass-media images – repetitive, yet with slight variations – that he began in 1962. For instance, one of most famous art on canvas was Marilyn Monroe. He would subsequently work freehand, without a pencil, rendering a painterly result. In order to develop his own niche in painting, his friends suggested he paint the things he loved the most. The result was the iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans, 1962. Warhol said of Campbell’s Soup “I used to drink it. I used to have the same lunch every day, for 20 years, I guess, the same thing over and over again.” Andy Warhol was realist and expressed all his concerns with realism of his arts. On Feb 22, 1987 was final day Andy took his breath. Andy has suffered from Arrhythmia, a gallbladder infection. During surgery, the doctor made a mistake and accidentally killed him. But what made Andy Warhol a inspirational icon is he way he goes about situations and adversities in his life. After being declined for his art from professors, to getting shot and making it alive is what makes him truly special.
Both Ana and Andy invented themselves through their skills, blessed talents and adversities. Both expressing their emotions in their they creations, you feel how they expressed them through their art. These two were not driven by fame, or the money. They created diversity and being social activist in their use of art. Ana using domestic violence and Andy using realism, both used their art to mean much more.

Post 10 - Deanna Glogowski
I took a picture of myself and used Shantell Martin's line art to influence my frame. I framed my face to show myself off as the most important thing. The lines emphasize that I am the spectacle in the image.

Fool's Gold |
I have the planet Earth dark. The Earth is remaining while the humans and their resources are impacted. Having a car is viewed as gold to humans. What they do not know or care about is that too many cars ruin the Earth. The affects of cars impact the weather, which is why the winds are extreme. Smog is also caused. This causes accidents and health problems. Eventually, this leads to the death of humans. What we do not realize is that we are hurting the Earth and the Earth is hurting us back in retaliation. Unfortunately, our decision is poor because the Earth will always win. We humans search for the gold, but are fools thinking that in this search, abusing the Earth, will come with no consequences. Change needs to happen so that our view of the world will not be changed from gold to grey.

Post 9 - Deanna Glogowski
My collage features multiple stories of me in a single picture. The dragon with lava dripping out of its mouth symbolizes me when I get angry and how I tend to loose control of myself. The dragon is smiling, though, because it shows my trying to be positive and happy even in the most chaotic and horrible of days. I have a cross in the background to show my religion. Its picture is that background for the entire collage because it shows how my belief that God will get me through anything keeps my anger and rage from taking over my day. Thus, the pit of lava is in a small controlled corner and does not extend to the area where the cross lies. My head is there to represent... well, me. It's so that way everyone can see that I am the dragon. I also used a bunch of markup tools to make the picture really pop and make things a bit clearer.

Post inspired by Jean-Michael Basquiat
I Am Me |
One quote that I chose from Finkelstein's book that relates to my work and Basquiat's work is "Like all languages advertising is polemic, it can express multiple levels and registers of meaning"(151). Mine has similar meaning to society because everyone is human. We all have emotions and the dark feelings that we can have are not healthy. All of our experiences and emotions impact who we are.

"As an audience ourselves on the screen and, in turn, the techniques of representation shape desires and pleasures and become constructive elements in the invention and management of identity"
For this weeks selfie project, I have decided to draw and create a self portrait and within my own version and inspired by Jean Michael Basquiat I love how he expresses his creativity through any image and shapes

Jean Michel Basquiat Inspired Digital Selfie
Jean Michel Basquiat’s art can be categorized in the Neo-Expression art movement. Basquiat’s use of harsh, childlike strokes on his canvas is evident throughout his pieces. I attempted to create my selfie in the same manner he did; which was making art in the moment.
In My Mind
Above I attempted to mimic Basquiat’s art by adding rough, out-of-place, drawings and words on a digital page. |

Post 8 - Deanna Glogowski
The picture I drew was based on the style of Jean-Michael Basquiat. Sloppy and unique in the way I drew it and let my creativity got outside of the lines. The picture shows me as a child, clinging to my parents, and how I grew as they pulled back from me and made me become the beautiful adult I'll one day be. The red on the bird shows the me in me, the blue shows my dad in me and the purple shows my mom in me. The golden cloud is the awesome future my parents upbringing led me to as opposed to the black clouds.

Andy Warhol Inspiration - Angel Cortez
Andy and Ana Essay
"Truth Lies Within The Art"
During the modern days of the 1900s, there were two distinct artists whom presented unique artwork that each influenced different approaches of self-identity. Andy Warhol and Ana Mendieta were the iconic artistic masters who played a role in the art world to expose the reality of hidden truths. Each of them constructed a vision of what a controversial image would appear to them. Ana Mendieta focused on the origin between life and women. Andy Warhol had figuratively intervened a glossy-produced screen between his viewers and the existence. The connection within their artwork attributes a significant meaning to society that ignorance and avoidance will not make things disappear. Ana and Andy had short-term lives, but left with a long-term impact on revealing the brutal real world.
The prevalent themes in each of their work were expressed from their own experiences that we can actually relate to. Andy Warhol's style was postmodernism pop art that led to high art. He states:
"How can you say one style is better than another? You ought to be able to be an Abstract Expressionist next week or a Pop artist, or a realist, without feeling you've given up something ... I think that would be so great, to be able to change styles. And I think that's whats is going to happen, that's going to be the whole new scene."
The combination of pop culture and the world of art pursued an ambition to use subjects that were not normally used. Andy looked at the people in the future who were beauties and talkers, which was the wrong material for his work. He was the receiver of ideas, not the generator, someone with a creative developing mind. His manners consisted of an open-minded movement. "Manners are about strategies of social exclusion; they define the individual's thresholds of tolerance, of what is acceptable or not" (Finkelstein 78). The paintings, photographs, and visual art videos had models that were out of the ordinary, like cross-dressers. To Andy, it was an ideal art form. Ana Mendieta was influenced by tragedies like nature, domestic violence, feminism, male degradation, and rape. Her work did not revolve around media nor society, unlike Warhol's inspiration. She traveled to various locations to capture emotional connections with the earth by featuring silhouttes of her naked body.
As time passed by, these individuals came from difficult backgrounds, but used it to their advantage to better themselves. Andy Warhol grew up with illnesses, no income, and a sense of isolation from society. It was a struggle for him to communicate with others, and to deal with issues of his skin and neurological disorder. Eventually, he got recognized for his work, but that did not people from criticizing him. Gay accussations, and insults about his odd personality. However, he never let bad comments bother him. It encouraged him to continue showing his work as long as people talked about him. Ana Mendieta, as a young child, has been through a lot since arriving to the United States from Cuba. She was seperated from family then put into an orphanage. During that time, Cuba and the U.S. were sought as enemies. She was often called terrible names for her being a minority and woman. It was a inspiration to join the feminist movement.

Fame contributed differently to these each of these artists. Andy Warhol used it to his advantage to aim for film in Hollywood and to gain networking with successful people. Unfortunately, Ana Mendieta did not have the opportunity to experience the recognition of her work. She was killed by her husband in the most tragic way. She passed away in the similar scenary as her silhouttes artwork on top of a roof. Instead of her memory fading away, her work is being recognized more and more.
These artists invented themselves through the presentation of these works. Each of them wanted to express their individuality in each self-portrait. To express their emotion, and inner self to others so everyone can understand their perspective of certain events. The art has meaning, but it is up to us to figure out what it truly means to us. "Today we see the art of the past as nobody saw it before. We actually perceive it in a different way" (Berger 16). Self portraiture is coming back in the most revealing method through art.
