Home - Jeff Martinez

When I think of home, I think of my siblings. I think of the people who have been with me all through my entire existence who have experienced so much with me.

Home# post 3# Priyanka Shah

"HOME" is where you feel loved, appreciated and safe.
I chose to click this picture to show two major points of my life and home. My first point to show you is I personally think that home can not made by walls it makes by love and family. I don't believe that home is home without family and love. My home is where i can live with my family.
Second point is Left hand side is my family and right hand side is my uncle's family, we were trying to show that if you have two different personality like we were in traditional dresses and my uncle's family was in western outfits. It shows that it doesn't matter of how you thinking or how you live but,  where you are living together as happy family that is home in my eyes.

Home

Home to me is my Church, Sister and Friends
Picture was captured last Sunday in church, the place where i feel comfortable the most.
My Sister and  friends are the people that stand always for me, push me forwad and shape my future.

Post 3 "Home"

Anastasia's Most Prized Possession

I decided to use this environment to represent "home". I did not use a picture of my home because that does not fully represent "home" to me. I used my car to represent "home" because my car also makes me feel like I am home. I am comfortable in my car and I drive friends and family around. These people make me feel like I am at home because I see them when I am home. I also get the feeling of home when I see my car because I use it when I go out and go home. After a long day in school and work, I get the feeling of relief when I see my car because I know I am going home. I do some similar things in my car that I do at home such as listen to music, eat, nap, do homework, and hang out. Relaxing in my car and driving is very enjoyable to me. Relaxing on a bed is very enjoyable to people, including me, but even more relaxing and enjoyable for me when I get to play my music and drive around.

I was inspired by the cliche “Eyes are the windows to the soul”, and my family.

Home

I have taken this picture because this is considered "home" to me. When I get back home from a long day of school or at work, I want to do is go back to my dorm and play a couple of games of Crash Bandicoot,  Ed Boons Injustice 2, Fantasy games, adventure games and fun games.
Home to me, is considered to be in peace and of mind within your own, expressing your joy and enjoyment of feeling like im at home. Where ever you go with your life, there will always be something or someone that brings you home.

"Home"

Home to me is "Kitchen " the gathering together as a family on one table.

"Home" means the people who surround you.
They care, support and love you for who you are.

Post 3 - Deanna Glogowski

The picture is of my family. We are in my room because that is where I am most comfortable and we are sitting on my bed. My dad is holding the Bible to show that my home is not complete without God in it. My family and the Bible are the center focus of the picture because they are like Frida Kahlo because her pictures tend to involve her surrounded by what she loves. My home is where God and my family are, so they surround me in my selfie.

Ehtisham Tariq - Weekly Selfie Autobiography and Place

I took a picture of my bedroom because I feel that my bedroom is my "home." This is because this is where I feel comfortable and relaxed. Being in my bedroom gets my mind off things. My room is where I sit and watch TV and have some great food. It is a great place to be.

This is me in the place that I'm most peaceful and that is in the ice rink where my true uncensored me where I can release all of my aggression out without punishment. I'm a nice guy until I get suited up and I get completely the zone.

"To photographs is to appreciate the thing photographed, It means putting oneself into a certain relation to the world that feels like knowledge-- and, therefore, like power."-SUSAN SONTAG
I click this picture because as Susan Sontag said "to To photographs is to appreciate the thing photographed"; I wanted to capture my selfie with liberty statue. My intention was to capture world famous monument in my mobile phone. I went to the liberty statue, for the 1st time, I made up my mind when professor said about liberty statue. It's near by my house but i never went there. I really loved it and it was great experience.

"To collect photographs is to collect the world. Movies and television programs light up walls, flicker, and go out; but with still photographs the image is also an object, lightweight, cheap to produce, easy to carry about, accumulate, store"

Photographs evolves over time. From taking it out of Polaroid, to saved to our phone gallary. But what makes every picture unique is the way it captures the memory in the moment. This Quote made me realized the bigger picture in life, that photos should be looked at in deeper meaning. From being on top of empire state building, or with friends and loved one. Every picture is worth a thousands words. To be collected keep those memories cherishable. For instance above, this one of many goofy selfies i have taken. Is me 5ft under in the sand with my head popping out enjoying my last hot day at the beach.

Manufactured Reality Display

Fiction Picture Presents.
"Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it" (Sontag 1). Any events or occurrences that come across as surreal tend to be unreliable until it is visually presented. Photographs are set to be proof of the truth and their existence. My photo presents a black and white scene with tattered clothing living in poor conditions. Someone may assume that I used to live like that if they saw this picture. But I am actually in my comfy and casual attire taking a photo in my messy garage. I captured this moment when I was feeling tired and sweaty to represent another person's story. This self-portrait is real, but it is not what it seems.

To me, photography was always pictures used for memories, or special occasions; a quick view and nothing more. To Sonotag and Sherman, however, photography intercepts the surface dimensional of images. In other words, photographs carry feelings and stories, similar to how paintings portray scenes. Sonotag’s quote “...Photographs are as much an interpretation of the world as paintings and drawings are” accurately describes the value hidden in pictures. Similar to Sonotag’s quote, Sherman’s photos each have their own character, who can have their own story. One thing I learned from Cindy Sherman is her use to capture feelings in her paintings; so I tried to evoke certain settings into my picture that might provoke a sense.

Post 2 - Manufactured Reality

"Photographs really are experience captured, and the camera is the ideal arm of consciousness in its acquisitive mood."                       -Susan Sontag

The picture above exemplifies the quote stated by Susan Sontag. The picture truly captures the experience of my young adult self sitting peacefully inside the most meaningful home that I have ever lived in. It may not seem like it to others but from my perspective, the emotions, passions, inspiration, and thoughts all are seeping out of my youthful face. For me, the connection is very strong because I've lived it. It is my own. Like in the quote, i really feel as if my consciousness was brought out and i feel that it will still be there for me in that very image when the future comes.

"Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it." - Susan Sontag

It may seem impractical to travel to China over the weekend, however, this photograph validates the experience. Most people tend to rely on photographs that can easily be manipulated and view them as authentic. When in fact, this was captured at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Self-Portraiture Display

Trapped, degraded, and misunderstood. Every one of us has felt useless at some point in their existence. You felt constricted in your own skin as if you were in someone else's body who developed such thoughts and feelings that you would have never thought even once. At times, you take a look at yourself in the mirror to only notice that it's not you. The purpose of this photo is to exhibit relevance. I put on some makeup to accentuate my facial features, a white dress to represent purity and laid down to stare into the camera with no emotion.
Cindy Sherman showcases her work through images that display her creative imaginations into a reality. Prager states, "... I relate to her use of color, lighting, and the way her 'scenes' are mocked up in a way that is never too clean." This self-portrait depicts a haunting and out of the ordinary structure with the cool vivid scenery like the dark rooms in her house. The picture compares to a helpless woman who has reached a point of no return. Her vision slowly blurs out to which you see through her eyes.
Although this photo may seem dark and strange, there is an initiative power within. The models that Mickalene Thomas has captured are fierce and bold women that were not afraid to show their independence. The self-portraiture shows no fear and awareness of what's to come. "Thomas's jazzy photomontages of women's limbs and facial features can be construed as commentary on female bodies are brutally picked apart in contemporary visual culture" (Dunne 1). The value of female bodies is criticized and compared to unrealistic; photoshopped models. There are naturally beautiful women of color who have the potential to execute mind-blowing photographs even mysterious ones. Thomas mentions in a video, Meet The Artist: Mickalene Thomas on "Portrait of Mnonja, that performance plays in her practice. In this case, the contributors are the camera and me.

Selfie #2 On Photography

Photo of Verification

"Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it"(Sontag 1). This statement was said by Susan Sontag. This quote is from her book On Photography.  Sontag stated that photographs furnish evidence. What I think she meant by this is that photographs can be a source of evidence. They are valid as evidence because they provide visual evidence and proof of something. As she mentioned, "something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it". Humans believe something when they see it. When we are shown something we are able to believe it and thats what a photo does for us as I mentioned before. Without the photograph, what we hear from someone else might not be believed or validated until it is shown in our faces by the photo.
My photo relates to her quote because it validates that I was outside. As Susan Sontag stated, "A photograph passes for incontrovertible proof that something has happened"(1). Although the full story might not show, there is proof that something like it happened. A photo doesn't validate anything until the background information is given. My dad thinks that ever since he bought me a car that I got lazy because I drive every where. I tell him that I still take walks, but he doesn't believe me. This is why when I was out walking my dog at night with my brother, I had a photo taken of me. Although it does not validate the distance I walked, it still proves that I am outside somewhere that is not my house and I did not take my car to get there because I do not have my car key in my hand. The only way to validate something is if there is visual proof to prove it, which is why a photo is important in society.

"To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed."

"It means putting oneself into a certain relation to the world
that feels like knowledge--and, therefore, like power."

I've lived my whole life visiting New York City and I can say that I have a special relation to it.  In the photo, I decided to take a picture from the phone's point of view (top).  I also decided to take a pic on what it really looks like when I take a picture (bottom).  It shows that I have control on what I can show on the city, meaning I can focus on what I want to take, while leaving out the rest of it;  I have that "power".

To Collect

Pictures that are taken at parties, graduations, birth or many other events. Images with the little details that show the smallest details on the faces. I am not a big fan of taking pictures of anything. But I do believe that capturing a picture, they become a part of your life it is having a treasure a great memory of that day, or with whom.
Quote:  "Images which idealize (like most fashion and animal photography) are no less aggressive than work which makes a virtue of plainness (like class pictures, still lifes of the bleaker sort, and mug shots)". This Quote explains how Cindy and Mickalene Thomas are an example of the perfect catching photography with any details, such as friends gathering or to make new memories of places and with who. It will help you to always go back to your phone camera.

Quote: "Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograoh of it."

In my opinon, i see that this quote consider more about memories that we make.Pictures are a prove that we vistied some places whereever or whenever it was. I believe that every new adventure everyone makes should be saved with as a great memory of a new place, a new experince that you can remember it for the rest of your life. Also i see that photographs are very important not even for our personal life, but they playing a big role in crimes and police work.

Quote: "Even when photographers are most concerned with mirroring reality, they are still haunted by tacit imperatives of taste and conscience." Susan Sontag.

To me, Susan Sontag is saying that, though pictures are believed to be the most accurate way of seeing reality after reality passed, the truth of the matter is that even those moments can be tampered with or interpreted differently. Models do not just appear in front of the camera with a perfect body and expertly done make-up. They required hours of professional make-up artists fixing up their faces and even more hours of editing the photo to make it look just right. They trick the audience into thinking that the models obtained that vision of perfection with the image, but even the image was just the product of the vision the photographer was going for. Even if there was no tampering with the picture it can still be tampered with while being looked at. When we see a picture of a girl running with a goose running in the background, we assume it is chasing the girl and she is scared. However, some people might see the girl running towards the one with the camera and not even noticing the goose. Maybe that the goose and the girl are playing some sort of secret game. Whatever the truth is, the audience has no definitive way of knowing for sure without asking the photographer directly. So, pictures may be our best way to accurately capture a moment, but, as Susan Sontag stated, even the most cautious photographers cannot stop a few uncontrollable pieces of bias or fiction from entering the photo.

Ehtisham Tariq - Weekly Selfie - Manufactured reality

Quote: "To collect Photographs is to collect the world."(Susan Sontag excerpt from On Photography).
What I believe this quote means is that when you take a photo, you are keeping a memory of something. You are taking photos to remember the events as they occurred. For example, when you have your birthday party, you take photos of yourself with family and friends so that you can remember what a great time you had at your party and how everyone made your day special. Photos are taken to create memories. It helps you remember the great times you had in your life.

Post 1 by Michael Andre

I picked this photo to interpret the views of both Mickalene Thomas and Cindy Sherman ideals all in one picture that I have taken of one of my friends and model. I feel that this picture shows the slight vulnerability of being lost and I depict the uncertainty.  even though that there is a slight vulnerability you can see the strength in her face that she can get through it. this was all a product of what she wanted to depict and what I tried to help her depict with the slight edit that I did for her.

Mickalene Thomas her works and art consisted of showing a woman's strength and depicting that female are not to be objectified. she wants to flip the typical mindset that males have the power to belittle and demean females she wants to go across that grain and flip it the opposite way. she wants to show the power that the black female has over the day of age we live in now and the full capability and potential that they can have.

Cindy Sherman, she is a person that believes that you should be able to depict oneself the way that you want to and change your self through a photo. she also likes to show that you can even set up a false sense as of where are you are using fake foreground and back round. also using the clothing and accessories and the makeup to depict a false sense of who you want to be. but in a tail, the fake representation that you want to depict is still gonna be a part of you no matter what a person may think.

Post 1 - Rebecca Tobias

My self portrait is a concoction of Mickalene Thomas’ and Cindy Sherman’s ideas. Aesthetically, I aimed to match Thomas’ portraits through my choice of makeup, outfit, and accessories. “La lecon d’amour” and some of her other works included muses with blue eyeshadow paired with red lipstick. In addition,  A majority of Thomas’ muses wore outfits that could be categorized as “disco-era fashion” thus I chose a floral jumpsuit paired with red heels and jewelries. Also, flowers were prevalent in her portraits therefore I designed the fern with a few roses.
Cindy Sherman promotes the exploration of one’s identity through a variety of mediums by self-morphing into multiple characters in each of her photographs. She meticulously planned the environment of her portrait which influenced me to do the same. The bookcase next to me represents knowledge and as the shadows appear to gradually consume the white wall, implying  how acquiring knowledge gives you more awareness, however, it unfolds the cruel truth of reality. As the shadow nearly reaches the mirror, it signifies how regardless of  the intimidation  the world may bring, how you view yourself should remain untouchable.
Photographers are capable of allowing and excluding what the viewers can perceive in their photographs. It is powerful how a single photo can be dissected into what the photographer is striving to convey. Thus,  I felt strongly urged to capture even the tiniest, yet pivotal details in my self portrait. http://www.askyfilledwithshootingstars.com/wordpress/?p=1230

Leslie Wilson

Cindy Sherman and Mickalene Thomas inspired my self portrait called “Me: Leslie”. The artists played a crucial role in my “selfie” because they inspired me to combine physical, and metaphorical aspects to the portrait.

After watching the Cindy Sherman documentary, and reading her articles, I realized how most of her pictures have their own feel, color, and lighting; which impacts how individuals see her work. Sherman changes her persona on camera, and becomes the image itself. Therefore, in my image, I decided to change the saturation, exposure, and size of the backgrounds. In attempts to mirror her actions, I also tried to give the self portrait a certain feeling that will reflect me as a person. Two of my favorite Sherman’s images are hidden in the background of the image, because I wanted to use her photography as paintings on the wall.

Mickalene Thomas’s use of patterns, textures, rhinestone, and collages spoke to me the first time I saw her paintings. There are different designs that don’t work well together, but when Thomas mixes bold colors with animal print patterns; I was amazed. Thus, the overall physical aspect of my image is dedicated to Thomas's colors, patterns, and, of course, rhinestones. Another important factor inspired by Thomas’s artwork is her use of collaging to put images together. Therefore, I decided to base my whole portrait on Thomas’s collages.

Both artists were inspired to do art by one issue; the under representation of women in the art field. If women weren’t painted as perfect role models in sixtes, or if Black women were equally expressed as White women were in paintings perhaps the art by Sherman and Thomas would have changed. The work ethic, and passion both women carry into their hearts and artwork is seen.

Post 1 Jeff Martinez

In my first selfie, I decided to take a picture of my back with a cross on it. A major portion of who I am as a person is my spirituality. The importance of my Christian faith in my life is represented by the cross with a flower and bible verse. My presence is in the picture, but I felt that I did not need to show my face because I did not want it to lessen the focus of the image on my back. The selfie was inspired by both the works of Cindy Sherman and Mickalene Thomas. Both artists showed me that I could represent myself and the different parts of it the way I want to.

Mickalene Thomas's works showed me that there is great value in the qualities that make one's identity. To be more specific she displayed the "strength, personality, and confidence" of women of color in her art. I found it admirable that Thomas focused on the women of her background who were not usually portrayed positively in art and showed the world that their identity is worth being proud of. It also gave me the thought of humility because everyone is different and unique and should be honored. I found it also very humbling to learn that she even went to use rhinestones that were time consuming to apply to make the people in her pieces pop. The backgrounds were always so full of shiny colors so I wanted some type of unique colorful background as well in my selfie.

I really am fascinated by Cindy Sherman's work. Sherman liked to use herself in mostly all of her photographs. Despite seeing her in the photographs, her work has made me reflect upon myself more than wonder about her. Sherman would recreate things that she had seen either in person or made up in her mind and made it the way she interpreted it. I would describe Sherman's work to revolve around role playing and showing the existence of a dynamic and fluid personality that people all have. Furthermore, I think that her work encourages us to open up ourselves and also be open to interpreting things differently. From this, I hope to encourage everyone to look into all the parts of themselves, find the parts they value most, such as faith if applicable, and strengthen it.

I’ve decided to represent myself, with some pictures of my family and friends and
with the man that my heart choose. Those people are the ones that gives me power
and strength. Mickalene Thomas inspired me with her pictures where she was
sitting with all her confidence and beautiful look that makes you think of how
can women is as strong as means too.

Different cultures believe that women shouldn’t have the same rights as men,
they should be treated differently then men because they are just “WOMEN'S”
My Favorite artwork of Mickalene Thomas was “Afro Goddess Looking Forward, (2017).
This picture shows her creativity i mixing different colors together in the background,
and she's in front with her black dark color skin which makes her appears different
and more attractive for people to look.

I am really inspired by Mickalene Thomas and Cindy Sherman, while I was doing this photography. They both are great artist. I found they have so different thoughts, stratergies and methods to do art, but they compliment each other.

After watching "Potrait of Manonja" I got this amazing idea. In this selfie I picked my one of good friend Geet as my model for this selfie.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm3XvKd_KPs  She just came from my country for a job. I felt that she owns this. When i saw the video I thought i want show something which is related to my culture and religion. Also at the same time we were trying to get a photo in her own personality.  It was really amazing experience of doing intensive photography

My purpose to show this selfie is her own thoughts, attitude, how she owns photography. One of my best try was to show beautiful traditional dress and look, which represent that she is Indian girl. She is showing her atitude, posture and grace how she handling her look. she kept her one leg up and one down. And by looking toward right she showing her grace.

In “Nobody is Here But Me,” i show that how much Cindy was trying to efforts get proper photo and show her own attitude and imagination. Belongs that Geet and I were trying capture perfect photo in her bold traditional style.

This selfie of me I choose to represent the greatest artist Mickalene Thomas and her artwork that I was inspired by. Mickalene Thomas showed us the greatest confidence behind each woman, and who they truly are coming from. I am showing you this selfie who I decided to represent my family background and the little piece I have from my hometown, Egypt.

My Favorite artwork of Mickalene Thomas was “Afro Goddess Looking Forward, (2017) In her Photography had shown her amazing work with her special paints mostly were about the black women who showed their strengths who bring out who they are and show their real colors. “By selecting women of color.’ (Thomas, 2016).

As Cindy Sherman who takes pictures of who she is or can change into a different character whoever. Cindy becomes a different person and represents them.

The selfie I took was inspired by Mickalene Thomas.  After reading the passages about her, as well as looking at her work (especially her photographs), I've seen that what Mickalene does is to show character of the people in her work.  It defines who they are, which is why I decided to take this portrait, to show who I am.

The readings about Mickalene and Cindy Sherman made me think that their work are complete opposites.  Cindy’s work is focused on alternate identities while Mickalene focuses on true identity.  But they also have similarities, which is how much creativity they put in their work.

In “Nobody is Here But Me,” I’ve seen how Cindy puts much effort into her photographs by the many costumes and props she had.  The video shows how much passion Cindy has just for a strip of photographs.  In the reading, it also describes how much people love her work and how it made her a big idol in photography.

In the Mickalene videos, she talked about how she designs her portraits, with all the products she puts on her work, such as glitter and rhinestone.  Just like Cindy, she shows how passionate she is with her work, whether it’s a photograph or a collage.  The readings support her work and praise on the meaning behind them.

This is a photo of me sitting on my couch at home.   I am not sitting with the recliner open.  Instead, I have one leg across the couch and one foot on the floor.  My left hand is holding a debit card and my right hand is calmly resting.  I have a comfortable shirt on, jeans on, and sneakers.  I am looking up and out, while the light is shining on me. The pose that I chose for this photo was inspired by Mickalene Thomas's work.  Her piece of work that inspired me to take this photo was I Can't See You Without Me.
Mickalene Thomas: I Can't See You Without Me

In the United States, we live in a society that is changing over time.  Women used to be limited and like a child under a man's responsibility.  Women used to work at home and have a dress code.  Women did everything at the command of a man. In this photo that I took, I am showing that I am not limited.  I am rebelling against the way women are supposed to sit, dress, and act. I have a serious face and am holding my debit card. I have the freedom to buy what I want and act how I would like to. This is significant not only because I have money, but because it shows that I have choice and opportunity, which is a powerful thing. I am also looking ahead to the future.  The light that shines upon me recognizes me. We see that I am moving away from the dark past behind me and looking towards a bright future. Many woman can relate to this.  It is showing the same idea that the photo by Mickalene Thomas is showing.

Mickalene Thomas shows a woman that has freedom and power.  She is looking to the future and out to those who might or might not like her behavior.  Regardless of their opinion, it is going to stay this way because woman hold potential and power.  “A hallmark of Thomas’s work…is what she describes as ‘recognition and acknowledgement and validation: you see me and I see you.’ It can be difficult to tear yourself away from those gazes. But then, why would you want to?”—Nicole Rudick    A woman of any color shares the freedom and power to thrive. Women are becoming more and more recognized as an equal as society progresses. This is what the near future holds.  Increasing numbers of woman making change leaves inequality as just a memory. We relate to each other by at least being human so lets be more powerful together as one, why tear yourself away from the gazes.  https://www.wexarts.org/exhibitions/mickalene-thomas-i-cant-see-you-without-me

Cindy Sherman also influenced me when I took this photo.  I carefully planned out where I was going to take the photo and then I set up my camera.  I used the timer on my iPhone to capture this image.  I planned and executed this photo on my own.  According to Phoebe Hoban, "By inventing her own genre, Cindy Sherman has influenced the way generations of artists think about photography, portraiture, narrative, and identity".  Her idea of change has led to change in photography and society.  It takes one person to start a change. Not everyone has to like it, and it can still succeed.

I have decided to represent myself sitting on my bed next to my decorations along with my red hood helmet. In this selfie figure I have chosen to take this because I was inspired by the lovely artist Mickalene Thomas, which is known well for her paintings and her artistic history. I really love her work and how she shows her revolutionary and her creativity.
My favorite artwork by her was “Afro Goddess Looking Forward, (2017) In her Photography it had showed her, amazing paintings, in the majority of her artwork,  she demonstrated and described it as recognition and acknowledgement.
Then I went into the depths and see more into her creativity and her history as well. I have watched her videos and I like how she had spoke about her painting of Mnonja and how it represents and spoke about unity and power and living as an African-American woman and I love how she embraces her art and the beauty of black culture and making history     “By selecting women of color,  I am quite literally raising their visibility and inserting their presence into conversation” (Thomas, 2016) The picture reminds me of me a lot with the creativity and embracing life with photography. I love Cindy Sherman’s film Nobody’s here but me (1994) The film reminded me how majority of the times of how i like to do things on my own, getting experiences with other things and getting to see the world.
To end my story,  I think about the quote Looking Forward, and Sherman’s art and films I dream of a good future, I can be living life peacefully within the body and creativity of thyself. After I took my selfie i look very focused on  my life and with no worries, staying true to yourself and keep moving forward. I am truly inspired by the talents of their work.

Post 1 Deanna Glogowski

My selfie was inspired by the artistic works of both Cindy Sherman and Mickalene Thomas. Both are artists how found inventive and revolutionary ways to show who they are in their work. Though they did so in opposite ways, they each still found a place in my selfie in one way or another. Most of the inspiration comes from Mickalene Thomas, though, as she is a master of using bright colors and areas and using models close to her to show her true self. She may mot be in the art she makes physically, but her every essence pours through anyway with the scene she makes, the colors she uses, and the models she enlists. In an article about Mickalene Thomas title, "Mickalene Thomas: I Can't See You Without Me," it states, "With a special focus on the artist’s opulent, grandly scaled paintings, I Can’t See You Without Me looks at four of the most significant muses in Thomas’s work spanning 2001–2018: her late mother, Sandra; her former girlfriend Maya; her current partner, Racquel; and the artist herself." Though, I don't have any people significant to me in the picture other than myself, I filled it with many significant things to me. My own personal gaming console, my own personal book, the Bible that I own. Even the red ribbon that chains me to the dollhouse belongs to me. Mickalene Thomas is masterful at using other people to show who she is in her art. I may not have used that part of her process, but I did take inspiration from the bright colors and the deep scene making. It also certainly shows who I am.
Alternatively, I followed Cindy Sherman's work by using myself as the model. Cindy Sherman is always the model in her art. The only time she isn't is when there are objects like mannequins to take her place. I was inspired by that and made myself the only subject of my selfie. Though, I did not follow Cindy Sherman's trend of remaking her face in her pictures. I, unfortunately, do not have that talent. In fact, it was said in an article title, "The Cindy Sherman Effect," that Cindy Sherman had a, "...dazzling skill as a perpetual shapeshifter..." I could not do that, but I still took the inspiration to tell a complex story with my selfie like Cindy Sherman does and I took the inspiration to be the only model. Thus, Cindy Sherman also inspired my selfie.
I used Mickalene Thomas and Cindy Sherman to help me make my selfie a perfect representation of me. My selfie is meant to show my constant struggle to grow up and retain things of my past at the same time. I am horrible at growing. I love my little baby things and I feel bad when I suddenly stop liking things that I used to love. One of my most frequent complaints from my mom is to grow up. That is why I am struggling to put on the vest in the picture and why I am chained to the dollhouse with a red ribbon. Little girls use red ribbons in their hair, so it chains me to the dollhouse I played with when I was a little girl to show how I can't let go of the past. The vest I struggle, which was worn by my grandmother and, later, my mother, is meant to show my struggle to become an adult and accept that I am an adult now. The three things in front of me are meant to signify my constants. The things that will always be a part of me, no matter how old I get. That is my love of video games, my love of reading, and my love of God. For as long as I live, those things will remain constant in me, so they are placed in front of me, unchanged by the struggle happening behind them. That is who I am and I can accurately say that I achieved this by looking at the inspiration I got from Cindy Sherman's and Mickalene Thomas's work and art process.
