The selfie I took was inspired by Mickalene Thomas. After reading the passages about her, as well as looking at her work (especially her photographs), I've seen that what Mickalene does is to show character of the people in her work. It defines who they are, which is why I decided to take this portrait, to show who I am.
The readings about Mickalene and Cindy Sherman made me think that their work are complete opposites. Cindy’s work is focused on alternate identities while Mickalene focuses on true identity. But they also have similarities, which is how much creativity they put in their work.
In “Nobody is Here But Me,” I’ve seen how Cindy puts much effort into her photographs by the many costumes and props she had. The video shows how much passion Cindy has just for a strip of photographs. In the reading, it also describes how much people love her work and how it made her a big idol in photography.
In the Mickalene videos, she talked about how she designs her portraits, with all the products she puts on her work, such as glitter and rhinestone. Just like Cindy, she shows how passionate she is with her work, whether it’s a photograph or a collage. The readings support her work and praise on the meaning behind them.
