Ehtisham Tariq - Ana and Andy Essay

Andy Warhol and Ana Mendieta are really famous for their work. Some prevalent themes in their works is that they both focus on the body, usually the face. For example, in Andy Warhol’s work, he usually focused on the face and many people appreciated his work. When I talk about the face, I mean self portraits. Ana Mendieta also included the face in most of her artwork, but her art would be more on rape, so to speak. Andy Warhol in the beginning was known as a weird kid, but as he grew older, he discovered that he had a passion for art. He discovered his talent.  I especially believe the way that Andy Warhol made art really is based on his own life experience because as a child, he was gay and liked the company of girls. That is why most of his art is based on himself, I believe. Also, because they were famous, that gave them more encouragement to do great work. I also believe these artists were very serious with their work because you could see much detail in their work and the time and effort they put into their work. I believe each painting had a message behind it. Each painting that each of them painted has something for the viewer to think about and leave the viewer with questions to be answered. I also believe that these artists invented themselves because one artist did not even know what he was talented in or what was his passion or what he wanted to do until he was a bit older. The person I am referring to is Andy Warhol. For example, Andy Warhol discovered that he was very talented in art and that is what drove him towards art. He would spend time in art galleries after class. I believe artists like these are very special because even with being ignored in the beginning, so to speak, with he not liking being around his family or enjoying the company of girls, did prove that he was actually somebody and got known for his works. I also believe that once they knew or realized that they had become famous, it drove them to do even better work than before.  Both of these artists are very special. I believe it was the drive that made them get to where they got to in their lifetime and many people enjoy their artwork even until today. I know when I was watching the documentary that was being shown in class, I was very much enjoying their works. Both of these artists’ artworks really blow your mind and really get you to start thinking more about art. It really makes you gain your interest in art. Both of these artists used technique to really get their ideas out to the people like us. For example, Ana Mendieta’s paintings would mostly show self portraits in blood. For example, Ana Mendieta would show a face covered in blood or blood on the floor to show a rape scene. This really showed the viewer that the image is conveying to the viewer that the image is reflecting a rape scene. Also, the same can be said about Andy Warhol. His artwork does reflect what he is trying to portray to the viewers. People look for meaning in a painting when they buy it. They look for the true meaning behind the painting when they buy. The people want to know what the painting means when they buy it. What is the painting trying to tell me? What is it portraying to the world? How is it telling a story? This is because every painting is trying to showcase some type of story. Paintings are not made just to make them. They are there to actually show the viewer something. As in the John Berger book, Ways of Seeing, it is stated that “If you buy a painting you buy also the look of the thing it represents.”(Berger, pg. 83).  This means that when someone buys a painting, he or she also looks at what it represents, not just how nice or beautiful a painting looks. People do not buy paintings on just the look of it. The point I am trying to make here is that Ana Mendieta and Andy Warhol do possess that in their paintings. Each and every one of their paintings has meaning behind it and the painting is not painted just because they wanted to paint something. It is painted because they want to show the people (us) something and send a message across. Also, another quote in John Berger’s book, Ways of Seeing, it is stated that “Significantly enough it (art) is an anthropology who has come closest to recognizing it.”(Berger, pg. 83). I believe that this is a very important quote because it is very important to recognize art and discover art. I believe these artists invented themselves through their artwork because they were pretty much not known before that. For example, Andy Warhol was made fun of in school when he was young and later on was known for his artwork. Also, the techniques they used in their artwork was important to the subjects they depicted because each piece of artwork had a message behind it. One other quote that I believe is very important is in the book by John Berger, Ways of Seeing, “The uniqueness of every painting was once part of the uniqueness of the place where it resided.”(Berger, pg. 19). I believe this quote is also very important because every photo like I said has a message behind it and a meaning to it. I mean when you paint, there is obviously something that you want to tell your viewer regarding the painting. You do want to send a message through the painting. The last quote I want to use is “This new status of the original workis the perfectly rational consequence of the new means of reproduction.”(Berger, pg.21). I used this quote because you could use old paintings to create new ones and to send out a similar or continued message from the past. In the end, I would like to say that I am very inspired by Ana Mendieta’s and Andy Warhol’s works.(Andy Warhol Documentary Film Part 1 of  2 and Ana Mendieta: Traces/Stopy | Krátký dokument | Galerie Rudolfinum).
